OUR STORY
When cancer struck twice, in late 2018, our son Bryan DeCaul was diagnosed with stage four testicular germ cancer after experiencing stubborn flu-like symptoms. As his caregiver, I watched him dream about his future and fight for three years, undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Then, five months before he died, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This was impossible to comprehend.
It was October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month), and mammogram exams were discounted at $35, I intentionally waited for the discount. However, when I arrived for the appointment, the receptionist informed me that the cost was actually $400. Needless to say, I was devasted. I didn't have the money. As a family we were financially managing the care of our son leaving us with limited finances. I left the doctor's office feeling discouraged and hopeless, not knowing when I would be able to afford the exam. I shared my story with my Pastor & a friend, and within a couple of hours, they sent me $400 via Cash App to complete the mammogram. After receiving the $400 for the exam, along with additional tests, the doctor informed me that I had stage four breast cancer.
